Hawaii is a one-of-a-kind destination that offers stunning mountain and volcano views and unparalleled surfing and beach activities. If you want your vacation to take you a bit off the beaten path to see more remote parts of the island, an ATV is a great way to get there. ATV tours on Maui have some of the best off-roading opportunities in the Hawaiian Islands.
Maui Off-Road Adventures
Address: Hana Ranch, 5670 Hana Highway
Hana Ranch is a working 3600-acre cattle ranch. Here you can ride the Polaris RCR XP, a four-seat UTV. The four-point safety harness in this vehicle lets you know this ride will be bumpy.
The trail will take you over a diverse range of landscapes and up the side of a mountain for spectacular island and ocean views. The trail reaches as high as 2000 feet above sea level and traverses rocky roads and river beds. You’ll get up close and personal with the landscape. Be ready to get wet and dirty.
The Hana Ranch food truck is a great place to fill up right before or after your adventure ride. Here you can eat ranch-grown organic food including the Hana burger. The food is terrific and fresh, but the best part of it is that you can enjoy your meal at the picnic tables overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Address: 305 Keawe St. Lahaina
This active cattle ranch in the West Maui Mountains is filled with dirt roads and trails offering picturesque mountain views. The trail will take you up to 1800 feet above sea level and offers views of the offshore islands of Lanai and Molokai.
The scenery is only part of the package of this tour. On your ride, you may have the chance to see cattle, horses, and other livestock. Locals like wild pigs and peacocks may also make an appearance.
You will get dirty on this ATV ride. In the spirit of getting dirty and experiencing the outdoors, rides are offered rain or shine.
The tours will pick you up right in town in Lahaina. Children five and up are welcome as passengers. Tours depart four times a day. Reservations are recommended.
Haleakala ATV Tours
Address: Haleakala Crater Road
Haleakala State Park is the most visited tourist attraction on Maui. The dormant volcano there formed the island. Spectacular sunrises and sunsets viewed from the top of the mountain are a favorite point of interest.
The ATV tours show off the spectacle of the volcano known as Haleakala, which towers over 10,000 feet above sea level. The trail will take you up the side of the mountain for a palm-sweating thrill that pays off with exceptional scenery. On this tour, you’ll see a diverse range of terrains and vistas like rolling pastures, ocean views, and mountains.
On a clear day, you can see both coasts of the island and maybe even the offshore islands to the west. An ATV tour is the perfect way to explore the Haleakala State Park.
Lanai Jeep Rental
Address: 934 Kahana St., Lanai City, HI
For double the thrill, take a hop over to the neighboring island for more off-roading adventures. A 45-minute ferry ride will take you across the channel from Maui to the island of Lanai, also known as Pineapple Island. It’s common to see whales and dolphins along the way. Lenai Jeep Rentals will meet you at the ferry with a four-wheel-drive jeep.
On this island wildlife is the star. You’ll have the chance to see Asian axis deer and mouflon sheep when you’re inland. Depending on the time of year, you can see green sea turtles and humpback whales when you’re oceanside. If you’re a birder, you’ll enjoy seeing wild turkeys, ringneck pheasants, doves and the Hawaiian owl.
Here you can use the jeep to visit our quaint mom-and-pop-dominated town of Lanai City in the center of the island, or you can access the rugged off-road trails that explore this unspoiled wilderness.
If you still want the ATV experience over the more subdued jeep tour, Lanai offers guided UTV rides that show off the ironwood forests and the Palawai Basin. The guides will share their knowledge of the history and geology of the island.
Maui is one the most visited of the Hawaiian islands. If you come all this way to visit, make sure you get out and see all the wonders that Maui has to offer. If hiking and biking just aren’t your thing, jeep rides and ATV rides may fill that gap for you. Off-roading is a hands-on way to see more scenery than you could otherwise. Choose any one of these great tours for an unforgettable experience.
