Ewa Beach-Something for Everyone

Ewa Beach is located on the leeward coast of Oahu. Ewa is used as a direction, meaning west, due to its western location on the island. With a number of highways running through it, Ewa is close to Kapolei, Pearl City, the airport and the military housing of Barbers Point. Close to the H1 freeway, Honolulu is about 35 minutes away during non peak traffic hours, although traffic in this area can be heavy. Ewa, meaning “crooked” or “ill-fitting” in Hawaiian, comes from a Hawaiian myth involving the gods Kane and Kanaloa. While Hawaii was under the rule of Queen Liliuokalani, Ewa Beach was a large plantation, which had great power on Oahu for many years. Until the close of the 20th century, Ewa Beach was only the small town along the coastline, surrounded by farmlands. Once the plantations closed, those agricultural lands began to be developed into residential areas and new communities began to emerge, to the north of the town. Ewa beach continues to grow, with new developments on the horizon. Previously having a reputation of mid to lower income local families, Ewa Beach has changed dramatically in recent years, and with urbanization and the influence of nearby resort Ko Olina, real estate prices have been rising.
